When your service dog does not obey...

Posted by Amanda Beasley on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 Under: Service Dog Life

We were at the gym and I was trying out a new elliptical.  I told her to  settle, she didn't. I told hr to lay down, she didn't. Then I realized that she was saying that to obey would not be doing her job, so I allowed her to make that call. In the service dog world, this is called Intelligent disobedience: a trained behavior where a service dog refuses a handlers command to ensure safety. You see, I have passed out many times on similar equipment. She has saved me from getting another concussion on multiple occasions by alerting me to a change in my body, indicating that I was about to pass out. She was not comfortable laying down- I'm guessing because she would not be able to smell me well enough. She did eventually lay down, but she kept her head up, near my foot. We are called a service dog team for a reason- we work together to keep me safe.
